short story idea
a story set in the near future, about people who try a new service – a place where you go to ‘bury’ someone after they die, and they grow back. but not stephen king pet cemetery style. instead it’s like a digital petri dish, where a specially designed artificial intelligence program is allowed to run inside an enclosed system that is fed data from the deceased’s digital archives (which are set up by the deceased and any loved ones while alive). as the program completes the scan and becomes authorized to use the various social media accounts used prior, the loved ones can receive ongoing communications (text, images, music, etc.) based on preferences of both the deceased and the family. some folks will maintain a relationship with a ‘lite’ version that simply emails you from time to time (perhaps based on the persona of a world traveler who wants to keep in touch), while others might house the program inside an artificial human body to pretend that their loved one is still living and with them. it could be strange for children who grow up with grandpa being dead when they’re at home but sort of alive when visiting grandma just because she prefers it that way.
